STATEMENT
Piero Lagonigro was born in Mexico City in 1963. Before beginning his formal education, he moved with his family to Italy, his father's homeland. This early transition to Rome marked the beginning of a nomadic life, with significant chapters unfolding across Europe, the United States, and Mexico.
Now based in Zurich, Lagonigro continues to live as a migrant—both physically and spiritually. His work reflects a unique, multifaceted perspective and a deeply empathetic worldview. Rich with meaning, paintings express a pluralistic vision, underpinned by a profound understanding of humanistic philosophy. The result is art that resonates with the essence of our collective past and present.
Though Lagonigro considers himself largely a “self-taught painter who dwells on the outside,” his studies in Art Restoration in Verona, Italy are clearly evident. His works are technically refined and aesthetically complex, drawing from Italian classicism and symbolism, while also infused with elements of his personal history. They burst with the vivid colors of Mexico, depicting subjects that often float in invisible realms where the multidimensional human experience is brought to life. Viewing his work is like navigating a metaphysical labyrinth.
Lagonigro’s painting is visual poetry. It transports us beyond traditional structure into what he describes as “a reality where we exist horizontally rather than vertically.” In this space, hierarchies dissolve, and we are invited to reconnect—with each other, with memory, and with meaning. Through his art, Lagonigro challenges us to contemplate, to reimagine, and ultimately, to know.
